Maria was from an upper class family from the good side of the tracks. She had gone to private schools all of her life and had managed to maintain a straight “A” average. One day, while walking through the mall she met a few of her friends from junior high. They introduced her to Carlos, a high school student from a public school. Carlos seemed rough yet mysterious. Her friend Lourdes hispered to her, “He’s cuteisn’t he? He’s a real bad boy!”
Over the next few weeks, Carlos made it a point to see Maria every day. At first, Maria was afraid of Carlos, but his mystery and roughness excited her. In her sheltered environment, all of the boys were so formal and polite; her normal idea of a date was studying in the library. They all seemed to be the same. Carlos was different and it attracted her. Their dates usually involved her going to places she had never gone before and laughing until she couldn’t stop. Soon Carlos asked Maria to go steady with him. She knew her parents would never approve, because they had nothing in common. Maria worked hard in school and wanted to be a doctor. Carlos, on the other hand, hated school and had no clue of what he wanted to be. He often thought about dropping out. Despite their differences, they remained attracted to one another. Every time she tried to study, Carlos would get mad and demand that they spend time together, “Come on let’s get out of this library. I can have you back before your mother comes to pick you up.” It wasn’t long before Maria’s straight “A” average dropped to a “C-.” Maria knew that Carlos was having a negative effect on her, yet her heart kept pulling her closer to him. In fact she did not think she could ever live without him. She decided that she was willing to put everything on the line for this relationship.
Soon, Maria started slipping out of her house at night to see Carlos. They began to experiment with alcohol. Carlos persuaded Maria to sneak out to a party he and his boys were having later on that week. He said it would give him the opportunity to show her off to his friends. After much thought, Maria decided to go.
Friday came and Maria snuck out to see Carlos. He was there at 11:30 p.m. sharp. As they arrived at the party, Maria was shocked at the loud and raunchy atmosphere. People were drinking in some corners of the room and using drugs in the others. Carlos was completely in his element and enjoyed himself while Maria suffered, feeling afraid and out of place. It was at that moment she realized that they were far too different, but the thought of losing him was more than she could handle.
